The production of my art work depends on the use of a studio space.
I am largely working in a long established tradition of using an interior space where the artistic variables of production are experimented with and shaped, in response to imagination and creative intentions.
I usually work with direct reference to physical objects and the play of colour and light. I return to these objects many times, exploring different relationships and compositions.
I have travelled widely and been fortunate to see a great deal of art in major collections. My passion has always been painting, though architecturual considerations of proportion, mathematics and balance inform many of my images. My influences are too diverse to list comprehensively, however they range from Duccio to De Kooning, I particularly enjoy Titian and Velasquez, also Vermeer, Rembrandt and Morandi amongst many others.
Through my teaching I am a regular visitor with students to contemporary exhibitions and galleries in London, here I find a great deal that I enjoy and which stimulates ideas for my own art making. |

The properties of my materials and also a spirit of improvisation during production are as much part of the content of my paintings, as any optical subject. As a result of these processes memory, dreaming and the experiences of metaphor and symbolism are often at play in my images; though these qualities are implied rather than dealt with in an overt way.

The materials I use are of the highest quality, so the work is stable and lightfast. I use mixes of acrylic paint and gel media, on a gesso primer. The base is either board or linen on board. |
